Cajeput oil, also known as Melaleuca cajuputi essential oil, is a powerful, camphor-scented oil distilled from the leaves and twigs of the cajeput tree, a member of the myrtle family and a close botanical cousin of tea tree and eucalyptus. Native to Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and parts of Southeast Asia, the cajeput tree has long been used in traditional herbal medicine to treat a variety of respiratory, muscular, and skin-related ailments.
The oil is extracted through steam distillation, and its signature scent is fresh, sharp, and invigorating—very similar to camphor or eucalyptus but with a sweeter, herbaceous undertone. Its main active compounds include cineole (1,8-cineole), alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, limonene, and linalool, which give it strong antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties.
In traditional folk medicine, cajeput oil has been used to relieve fevers, fight infections, soothe aches, and ease congestion. Indigenous healers applied crushed cajeput leaves to wounds and used the vapor of boiled leaves to treat breathing difficulties. Today, cajeput oil is a valuable part of aromatherapy, massage therapy, topical pain relief, and natural skincare.
